Sudden Valley's Awesome Golf Course

The Sudden Valley golf course was designed to be the centerpiece for the private community of Sudden Valley. It is rated "Four Stars" by Golf Digest. Sudden Valley has been the site of many major Northwest tournaments including a Washington State Open, four Washington State Men's Amateur Championships, a Master-40, a Washington State Senior Women's Championship, the Men's Mid-Am and numerous PNWPGA Pro-Amateur tournaments. There is a full service pro shop for all of your golfing needs, a bar & Grill that is open 7 days a week and an all grass practice facility that is maintained with same degree of professionalism that is given the golf course. There are also some great professional instructors who can help you improve your game.

The front nine is pretty open and flat and borders Lake Whatcom. Fairway lands are fairly generous and the greens are large. The back nine follows a ridge uphill with narrower evergreen-fringed fairways and smaller greens with lots of character. The Sudden Valley golf course is considered a true masterpiece, stressing finesse and accuracy with water hazards on fourteen of the eighteen holes and some forty-seven bunkers sprinkled throughout the course.

Stimpson Family Nature Reserve

One of the closest hiking trails to Sudden Valley is at The Stimpson Family Nature Reserve. It has about 4 miles of hiking trails through a beautiful forest setting and meanders past two ponds that support a wide variety of plants and animals. The Reserve is a combination of the 138-acre Lake Louise Natural Resources Conservation Area owned by the Department of Natural Resources, 196 acres owned by Whatcom Land Trust and 34 acres jointly owned by the City of Bellingham and Whatcom County.

A large part of the Stimpson Family Nature Reserve was donated to the Whatcom Land Trust in 2000 in memory of Edward K. and Catharine C. Stimpson by their seven children.

Whatcom County Parks & Recreation manages the entire reserve and is honoring the intent of the donors and DNR by focusing on education resource and protection, so bicycles, dogs, other domestic animals, and collecting of anything natural are not allowed in the reserve. There is even a bus stop right at the reserve on Lake Louis Road, making it easy to access for anyone.

Buyers: Interest rates are still low making now may be a good time to get in the market, depending on your circumstances. There are still plenty of homes to choose from and many homes have been on the market a long time so there are some motivated sellers out there who need to sell their homes.

Sellers: There is still a lot of competition right now and if you don't want your home to sit on the market without an offer here are a few bits of advise:

  • The most important thing you can do is price your home right, have your real estate agent do a CMA and price your home aggressively, that is in the lower range of similar homes if you want a quick sale
  • Have a pre-inspection done to your home and fix any problems
  • Give your home curb appeal
  • Offer a Home Warranty if it is an older home
  • Get rid of clutter, start clearing out your things, even if you have to put them in storage.
  • Think about staging your home, get advise from a staging professional or at least your agent.

Real Estate in Sudden Valley

Real estate in Sudden Valley tends to be more affordable than those in town, primarily because of its location. Some residences in Gate 1 and 2 enjoy great lake views as those are the two gates on the water (needless to say homes in these gates are priced higher than the rest), and the rest of the residences enjoy privacy and a natural setting. Most of the amenities are located in Gate 2, though Gate 1 has the marina with wet and dry slips for residents to rent. Deer can be seen regularly in the resident's yards throughout the neighborhood grazing, along with squirrels and rabbits.
